The short answer: no, wild camping is not legal in Madeira.

Parque de Campismo da Ribeira da Janela — small site near Porto Moniz, quieter than the main site.
Parque de Campismo de Santana — in the north of the island, surrounded by laurisilva forest. Perfect base for levada walks.
Parque de Campismo do Fanal — inside the UNESCO-listed laurel forest. Remote, atmospheric, cooler temperatures.

All official campsites accept campervans. Fees are low (typically €5–15/night for a campervan + 2 people). Facilities vary — some have showers and electricity hook-ups, others are more basic.

2. Private Quintas and Farms

Some private properties (quintas) in Madeira allow campervans to park overnight for a small fee. Check local Facebook groups and apps like Park4Night for current listings — these change frequently as new spots open and close.

Madeira is famous for breathtaking scenery — and notoriously challenging roads. The island is essentially a volcanic mountain rising from the Atlantic, which means steep gradients, tight hairpin bends, and narrow single-lane roads are the norm rather than the exception.

Speed Limits

Standard Portuguese speed limits apply in Madeira:

Urban areas: 50 km/h
Main roads (EN routes): 90 km/h
Via Rápida (expressway/Via Expresso): 100 km/h

In practice, the mountain roads (ER routes) rarely allow more than 30–40 km/h due to the terrain. Don’t rush — the roads demand your full attention, and the views reward those who slow down.

Alcohol Limit

Portugal has one of the strictest drink-driving limits in Europe: 0.5 g/L blood alcohol content (BAC). For new drivers (licence held less than 3 years) and professional drivers, the limit is 0.2 g/L. Zero tolerance is effectively the safest approach given Madeira’s mountain roads.

Seatbelts and Child Safety

Use engine braking on descents. Madeira’s roads drop steeply. Don’t ride your brakes — shift to a lower gear and let the engine slow you down.
Sound your horn before blind corners. It’s normal and expected on the mountain roads. A short beep on every blind bend is good practice.
Park only where other vehicles park. If locals don’t park there, there’s usually a reason — soft shoulder, restricted zone, or it blocks turning space for larger vehicles.
Avoid the northwest and central mountain roads after dark if you’re not confident. These roads are beautiful but unforgiving in the dark without local knowledge.
